So we have been rocking the Barenaked Ladies "Snacktime!" album hard latetly. But as of last night it has been replaced. I am a big fan of the Juno movie soundtrack and a lot of the songs are by Kimya Dawson. A fun folk singer with a simple guitar sound that she plays herself while she sings. She is 1/2 of the band The Moldy Peaches and recently a new Mom. Her daughter is named Panda and has inspired a new children's album called "Alphabutt". Yes I said butt.
Yesterday I bought the album on iTunes for The Phi's iPod and while we played a very rowdy game of Hungry Hungry Hippo we listened to the whole thing and we feel in love! The melody of the songs sound very similar to her Juno songs, but the lyrics are too cute and funny. It sounds like she recorded all the silly songs she would sing to her daughter. The songs are simple, short and repetitive. All good things when it comes to children's music.
Let me highlight a few of my favorite songs!:
- "Louie" and simple song about a doggie names Louie. Repetitive but The Phi learned this song after only listening to it once. It is so catchy and I caught her singing it this morning.
- "Smoothie" a song that really hits home on how first time mothers feel during pregnancy. All the worrying and anxiety that happens feeling someone grow inside of you. Of course all done in a super cute fun way.
- "Alphabutt" because in our house there is nothing more funny that farts, gorillas, pottys and poop. Check out the lyrics......
A is for apple
B is for butt
C is for catbutt
D is for doo doo
E is for elephant doo doo
F is for fart
G is for gorilla doo doo
H is for huge gorilla fart
I is for eyeball
J is for jammies
K is for kid fart
L is for loud and long farts
M is for monkey butt
N is for saying good night night at nap time
O is for Oh!
P is for panda peeing and pooping in her potty while papa plays peek a boo
Q is for quebert
R is for robotic monkey who's going to take over the world
S is for stinky
T is for turd
U is for uh oh
V is for flying V
W is for wee wee
X is for exactomundo
Y is for yuckie and yummy and you
and Z is for farts that smell like the zoo
I have a feeling that we will be listening to this album over and over again for a long time! (The thing that made my ears perk a little was that she does say "and that sucks" in one of the songs.)
