I have spent many and many hours over the last 3 days in the bathroom. Why, you ask? Because potty training sucks. It sucks big time. This is how is usually goes. The Phi starts doing the pee-pee dance. So we head over to the bathroom and she sits. Sometimes on her own, sometimes not. And then we sit, and sit, and sit. She is good for awhile until she can't hold it anymore. Usually about an hour. The she starts to freak out. She tries to get up and starts crying. I have to literally hold her on the potty and she freaks until.....tinkle tinkle she starts to pee and then she stops and becomes so proud of herself. She tell me "Mommy I go pee-pee in the potty". But I can't believe how long she can hold it for. Yesterday we had no accidents, and she peed 3 times in the potty, but each time was a battle at the end. To keep her entertained on the potty (because she can sometimes sit there for over an hour) we have little toys, books and yesterday we even made up a song. Like to hear it? Here it goes....
Souppie (or anybody elses name) Souppie
Has to go Has to go
Pee-Pee Pee-Pee
In the potty In the potty
Everyday Everyday
So we can say So we can say
Alright Alright.
There are some hand claps that go along with it. And we sang it yesterday with a lot of name like Tata, Nana, Tia, Angelica, Lili (even though she doesn't go pee-pee in the potty), Grandma, Daddy, Mommy, Sam, Nino, Nina. But the funniest is Day-Day because she will sing the whole song in the deep voice she uses to say "Day-Day". Today I made her a sticker chart to keep in the bathroom as some more incentive to go. But this really sucks. The Phi has been so great at all other transitions. She went from bottle to cup no problem, from our room to her own no problem, from crib to bed with no problems (the second time we tried), I was really hoping potty training would be easy too. I know our timing isn't the greatest because we leave on vacation in a few days, but I think the potty will come with us and maybe a week with her big cousin (who The Phi adores) will encourage her to want to go on her own too!
Anyone have some helpful tips?
thats weird that she does the pee pee dance but then holds it for another hour before she lets the flood gates open (i've been reading all about housetraining dogs lol) my only suggestion is that you have her on a strict schedule with eating and drinking and going potty. kids like routine
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. It will happen. How many 13 year olds do you know who aren't potty trained? (Let's just hope you don't have to wait that long)--JVS
ReplyDeletemy girlfriend...b/c obviously i can't speak from experience... said that to potty train her son she would take her son every two hours to the potty and give him half an hour...if he didn't go, then he didn't go. if he peed his pants in b/w sessions well then she would change him...within a few days he was trained!
ReplyDeletePotty training stinks. The only advice I have is that "This, too, shall pass."
ReplyDeleteIf it's just not happening without a lot of heartache and stress, you may want to go back to diapers and try again later. I always just put a potty out for each of my kids when it was about that time. We'd try for a day, and if they didn't get it, we'd put it away for a month and get it back out. One day, they'd each just "get it" and we'd put the diapers away.
Best of luck!
